The last steel to poured at Consett - 1980
Consett is an isolated town in County Durham. It was totally dependent on its one major employer, British Steel. After the 1980 steel strike, it was chosen as the first plant to be closed. Many redundant workers tried to establish small businesses. Most failed, though one success notable through its advertising campaign was Phineas Fogg crisps.
